Stained Glass Spell Cookies

The winter holidays are fast approaching and I am itching to start decorating and baking.  This might not work out this year as my family is looking for anew place to live.  Holidays plus moving seems like a bad idea, but the alternative might be worse.  So, anyhow, I thought I'd share a fun kitchen magic recipe.

Sugar cookies are fun, but stained glass cookies are incredibly pretty and lend themselves to kitchen magic.  They can be shaped and coloured to promote prosperity, happiness, fertility and  fun.  Given as a gift, they are impressive.

You will need parchment paper (no, really, you've got to have this), several Ziploc bags, and a mallet or hammer. Worried yet?  You will also require:

a package of sugar cookie dough (or a recipe if you feel ambitious)
about 40-60 hard candies (Jolly ranchers work well) separated by color
a cookie sheet
cookie cutters or a very sharp paring knife

Roll out your dough and cut out you shapes to fulfill your intention.  Personally, I like stars (it's very easy to find star shape cutters in a variety of sizes which makes this step faster).  Now cut out a shape in the center of that shape.  For best results, leave about 1/4" all the way around.  transfer your shapes to a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and chill the dough.

After the dough is chilled, preheat your oven according to package directions.  Put candies in a Ziploc and crush with a mallet.  This is both fun and messy.  Be warned.  Fill the cookie centers with crushed candies. I recommend using only colors that are related (like blue and green or red and purple).  Choose colors that support your intentions (like red for love, green for prosperity, purple for spirituality).

Now bake your cookies, watching carefully as they do not work well if you over bake these.  Allow to cool thoroughly before removing from the cookie sheet. Store in a tightly sealed container.

I love edible magic and I hope you enjoy these too.
