I helped a friend the other day by cleansing the energy of her newly purchased home. It was a foreclosed property and there were already problems (they haven't moved it yet as they are working on some major repairs before they start living there). I walked around and felt the energy. Surprisingly, it wasn't bad- a little sad and there was certainly a sense that things hadn't worked out according to plan. We left a small offering under a quince tree for the beings associated with the land and then we sprinkled a powder to deter negativity and invite positive change.
The powder is rather simple to make and most of the ingredients can be found in your kitchen cupboard or at a health food store. Mix it with a mortar and pestle or a glass bowl, then transfer to a old spice jar for convenient application.
20 drops peppermint oil
1/4 cup salt
5 drops lavender oil
3 drops chamomile oil
1/2 teaspoon sage
1/2 teaspoon pepper
a dash of clove
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Sprinkle in a counterclockwise fashion to repel or clockwise to attract. A new or full moon would be the best time, but other days would work too. This makes quite a bit of powder, so feel free to store it for future use if you'd like- check you almanac or Llewellyn.com.
